Jeddah Airports Company inaugurates the new aviation fuel services building for Apsco at King Abdulaziz International Airport

Today, Jeddah Airports inaugurated the new aircraft refueling facility at King Abdulaziz International Airport, operated by Apsco. It is the first environmentally friendly building at Saudi airports, certified with the LEED Gold rating by the U.S. Green Building Council. The inauguration was attended by Jeddah Airports CEO, Eng. Mazen bin Mohammed Johar, Apsco CEO, Dr. Azzam Qari, along with several security and operational leaders at the airport.

This step is part of Jeddah Airports' ongoing efforts to improve services at King Abdulaziz International Airport, one of the region's key hub airports, and to support Saudi Arabia's efforts to promote environmental sustainability in line with the goals of the National Aviation Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030 programs.

Eng. Mazen bin Mohammed Johar explained that the opening of the new refueling facility is a significant step towards implementing the national aviation strategy by adopting eco-friendly operational processes and creating an attractive work environment for aviation employees in alignment with the targets of Vision 2030. He emphasized Jeddah Airports' commitment to sustainability, improving energy efficiency, and reducing carbon emissions at the airport to offer a safe and sustainable travel experience for passengers. He expressed pride in Jeddah Airports' role in this project, which will enhance operational efficiency at the airport.

Johar also pointed out that this project aligns with the General Authority of Civil Aviation's broader objectives to support growth and development in the Kingdom while promoting environmental practices in the aviation sector. Jeddah Airports is working to achieve environmental sustainability goals at King Abdulaziz International Airport through comprehensive strategies based on advanced technologies in collaboration with global partners, aiming to make the airport a model for environmental sustainability in aviation in the region.

King Abdulaziz International Airport has made tangible progress in environmental preservation by adopting various sustainability-supporting projects. This includes signing a memorandum of understanding aimed at increasing waste conversion rates to 94% through recycling, which helps reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero goals. The airport's efforts also include recycling decommissioned aircraft, recovering materials like aluminum, steel, and titanium, and signing an agreement with the National Center for Environmental Compliance to relocate an air quality monitoring station, providing real-time air quality indicators every five minutes to reduce pollutants within the airport.

Additionally, Jeddah Airports has worked on reducing electricity and water consumption by using solar panels and smart technologies, cutting consumption by more than 45%. Energy-efficient air conditioning systems help reduce costs, while green spaces spanning over 3 million square meters help lower carbon emissions by 73.5 kilotons annually at the airport.

It is worth mentioning that King Abdulaziz International Airport, as part of its environmental sustainability commitment, has achieved notable accomplishments in various environmental fields, which contributed to its recognition with the Makkah Environmental Excellence Award in 2022.
